Urban Europe funding for urban development
With a focus on innovation, the application process involves 12 countries and is funded by the European Commission to the tune of about € 26 M, aiming at new, smart, user-centred solutions in energy, transport, information technology, and smart governance. The four main themes of the application process are:
- Smart integrated urban energy and transport systems
- Smart tools and services for integrated urban energy and transport systems
- Smart data, big data
- Smart governance and smart citizens
The application period for the first phase of the international application process ends on 17 March 2015 and the application period for the second phase ends on 15 September 2015. Projects recommended for funding by the international evaluation panel will be asked to produce national applications in December 2015 and decisions on funding will be made according to national practices. A consortium of projects must have partners from at least three countries.

Finland's funding emphasises innovations and companies are the main target group for Tekes. Tekes can also provide funding for cities. Funding for public research is possible according to a joint project model, and the project must include corporate partners from Finland.
