Call for thematic proposals – WiFiUs research cooperation

Tekes, the Academy of Finland and NSF (National Science Foundation) are launching a joint WiFiUs (Wireless innovation between Finland and US) call for proposals in the area of wireless communication research. The themes for the proposals are new frameworks, architectures, protocols, methods and tools for the design and analysis of durable and reliable wireless networks (incl. cognitive radio networks). Joint research projects that receive funding will be included into the activities of the WiFiUs virtual institute (www.wifius.org).
Application period: Wed 30.04.2014 - Fri 01.08.2014

Tekes's call for proposals will close on 1st August 2014. The decisions about which projects will receive funding will be made before the end of 2014.

The theme of this call for proposals is research on wireless communication, and the funding is directed towards joint projects between Finland and the USA.

WiFiUs (Wireless innovation between Finland and US) is a virtual institute which aims for long-term research cooperation between Finland and the USA on the solutions of wireless communication and development of competence and innovations. The WiFiUs institute was launched by Tekes, the Academy of Finland and the National Science Foundation of the United States in 2011.

The themes for the proposals are new frameworks, architectures, protocols, methods and tools for the design and analysis of durable and reliable wireless networks (incl. cognitive radio networks).

General research topics include:

  • spectrum sensing and spectrum sharing
  • network security and capacity
  • coexistence of legacy and new systems
  • network architectures
  • heterogeneous network design
  • resource allocation
  • quality of service
  • energy efficiency

Additional topics of interest include:

  • interference management and alignment
  • device-to-device communication
  • cooperation and coordination methods among wireless clients
  • configurable antennas
  • millimeter wave communications

The projects must have a joint research plan between the Finnish and US research groups. The research plan or a separate annex must describe the cooperation between the research groups. As a rule, a project should take two years to run and start, at the earliest, on 15th November 2014. WiFiUs projects do not require company funding, but the projects must include companies benefiting in other ways, e.g., via steering group work. Participating companies must notify about their participation in a project: http://www.tekes.fi/en/online/funding-terms-and-conditions/

Tekes's funding share and conditions

Tekes's funding share for the projects is 60–70% of a project's eligible costs. Tekes's funding for research institutions is described in more detail on Tekes's web pages.

Tekes is prepared to provide a total funding of about € 1 million for the projects.

Application

Applications are to be sent to Tekes by 1st August 2014 before 4.15pm via Tekes's online services. Mark your application with "WiFiUs" to identify it.

At the time of the submission, the application and its annexes must include an adequate description of the project's objectives, task modules, resources and a cost estimate. If the application submitted is found lacking, Tekes may process it and make their decision on the basis of the information provided.

Application period

The call for proposals will open on 30th of April 2014 and close on 1st August 2014 at 4.15pm.

The decisions about the projects that will receive funding will be made before the end of 2014.
