Launched in 2010 with a budget of EUR 21 million, the PRE Programme (Built Environment Process Re-engineering) was the first research programme of RYM Ltd. Nearly 40 companies and 6 research institutes worked together to find more user-oriented approaches and business models for the real estate, construction and infrastructure sectors.
One key tool used was Building Information Modelling (BIM), whose viability was examined extensively in, for example, industrialised construction, infra sector delivery chains as well as property lifecycle management and community planning.
PRE and its 6 work packages (Model Nova, NewWOW, BIMCON, DRUM, Infra FINBIM and BIMCity) produced a total of 112 international publications and 54 theses.
Many concrete benefits
According to Ilkka Romo, Vice President R&D at Skanska Oy and Chairman of the PRE Programme Steering Group, the results have already made their way onto the market and into further development. These will be seen to a larger extent within a 2-3 year period.
"Competition is constantly getting tougher and the PRE Programme has allowed us to cement our position as a leading country in BIM. Modelling provides an outstanding platform for increasing productivity, quality and work safety. We are also making use of the programme results here at Skanska," states Romo.
He refers to the DRUM (Distributed transactional BIM) work package as an example. It produced a concept for the timely linking, management and network distribution of data models. The DRUM work package was led by Tekla Oyj, with Aalto University serving as a research partner.
"Extracting data from a single, heavy model is laborious and time-consuming. With BIM tools, various parties involved in a construction project always have access to up-to-date information, thus reducing unnecessary work and mistakes," explains Heikki Haikonen, Director of Tekla Building & Construction.
